The problem starts when i change from high to ultra. If i don't change anything when i'm in game the game runs fine even on ultra, as far as i can tell now.
OK, awesome. Maybe I should just rip out the ultra setting since the benefits are pretty marginal.
Another option (I've been contemplating this) is to add a 64-bit Windows binary. That should greatly improve performance on 64-bit systems. Yeah, sounds good :-)

3D works great here \o/ I'm playing on Linux (Steam) as usual. Ultra details.
My gear: i5-750, 12 GB RAM, GTX-960-2GB (NVIDIA driver 396.54). Ubuntu 18.04.1-64bit.
