Try running the backup job on batch priority. It will daramatically reduce it's impact. It's a Little sysadmin trick. If you don't have access to the ultra-low priorities on the server, such as batch. A -19 priority in a Posix environment (or "lowest" priority in Windows) should be sufficient. Don't set the i/o scheduler to idle or it will never get done.
