There are so many variables as to why people keep playing... or, slow down in playing... or, quit all together. Some of the variables might include... boredom... change of interests... age... a person's job... change of schedule... school/college... a divorce... a death... sickness... family issues... etc. IMO, the boredom variable is the most important, because this is the one variable the game maker can have a direct impact on. If people are leaving, or not joining, as the game maker, I'd think about making the game less boring. As an older player, this is not as much of an issue, since I've slowed down anyway... but even I have a limit as to how much boredom I can take. Just my two-cents.
