I got a report about holes in tailored panels that are placed on floors, asking if this was a bug. The situation is a bit involved and I'll explain what's happening along with two workarounds. First of all, this is the problem: http://downloads.angeldu.st/panel-holes.jpg You can see that one of the red rugs has sharp, irregular holes in it. It looks and feels like a game bug, but it's intentional. Why? How? Let's dive into it! THE PROBLEM From day one Angeldust has had the visual characteristic that nothing in the world is fully flat or level. I intentionally designed it like this to prevent things from looking artificial and rigid. You can see this even in the village walls and the paving tiles: each block is slightly imperfect so it looks more cartoony and organic. Floors and ceiling are never perfectly level. That's where the panel problem starts: if you place a panel on a floor, there are slightly elevated spots which will pop through in some spots. Same for ceilings. (The problem doesn't exist for walls, because blocks are perfectly straight in the vertical plane.) WORKAROUND 1 Now we know that gaps are caused by elevated "spikes" in the floor or ceiling, we can easily identify the spots that are the most elevated. It's where the floor or ceiling pops through. The first workaround is to place the tailored panel on top of one of these elevated spots instead. So remove the existing panel and place a new one on a spot that previously popped through. Angeldust will then make sure the panel is above (or below) that elevation, making it raised over the entire area. Alternatively, for some blocks and effects it might actually be desirable to have a bit of pop-through, so you can experiment with different spots on a floor or ceiling to see what pops you can get. WORKAROUND 2 The 'barrier' block is designed to prevent pop-through. If possible, remove a block in your floor or ceiling and place a barrier instead. Place the tailored panel on top of the barrier and you will never get pop-through. CLOSING WORDS The 'hole problem' likely extends to large text signs too, at least the text sign background. My opinion remains that it can probably be used for some cool effects, like non-rectangular shapes, though it's hard to control the effect. I'd be interested to hear tricks and tips from builders about their experiences with the tailored panel and text sign.
