I was going to recommend the alt-tab thing. You can also try right clicking on the icon. You can also try turning of steam overlay. Sometimes that malfunctions on certain platforms, because of the way Steam straps it into the executable on launch. Finally try clearing your settings. You'll have to ask where to find that on Mac and Windows. I only know where to find it on Linux.
