Last night—roughly eight hours before this post—the Angeldust database server was abnormally and forcefully shut down by the operating system because of memory pressure. This led to the Angeldust game server and website being unresponsive or unusable for those eight or nine hours. I've restarted the database server now and memory usage is within an acceptable range, just like it's always been. As far as I can tell no (or _very_ little) data has been lost, because the Angeldust game server itself kept running and resumed its normal operation after the database restart. Some creatures and loot (coins) hung around for eight hours during the downtime. First of all, my apologies to everyone who was unable to play, quest or post during the downtime. Let me know if you think I should somehow compensate you for the downtime of the game and we'll work something out. Secondly, I'll investigate what caused this fatal memory usage spike. We've been running flawlessly for almost ten years now, so there must be a unique reason this happened. As the first players are rejoining the game world right now I hope everyone has a great Easter and enjoys the game.

It's impossible to figure out the exact cause of the problem from the server logs I have. As a general solution I've set up minor limits on how much parallel work some parts of the Angeldust server system will take on. This limits the amount of system memory that is consumed and hopefully prevents the database server from forcefully shutting down again. I'll be vigilant and keep an eye out for any performance issues or problems arising from these new limits.
