I found the cookie in my inventory and tried to give it to my cat, but I just can't seem to let go of it. No matter how many times I click on it it just stays in my hand.

Well you have a infinite amount so you actually have been giving him the cookie 🍪 😸 But that does lead to a cool idea that your pet should make make a happy sounds and have heard bubble over it when you give it a cookie after you tamed it.
