I"m not sure if this is right, but i'm pretty sure that you're supposed to get gold and a message for killing animals. i only get that with very very few kills.

You get the gold when you discover the creatures/areas. You get the messages as soon as there are no more threats nearby.

Actually, you only get a message on a creature kill if it is the first time for that creature or a new (higher) level for that creature... and then, as space said, when the immediate threat has cleared.

Since we're busy showing off how smart we are... we also get a message on a creature kill if you kill it a second time, also.
