You're just the first one "there". :) FF has not revealed the full algorithm, but certain aspects are deductible... 1) it's always in the "housing ring" 2) it avoids the "corners" 3) it has a land level cap (37ish) 4) it leans towards player levels close to your own 5) if no other player meets those requirements, you show up as the first on there (ie alone)

Hummm is—as usual—mostly right! If you get dropped in a level 1 forest, that's a good sign that nobody else currently wants to "Play together!". If others did enable the mode you'll join them. This doesn't happen too frequently right now, but soon we'll hopefully have oodles of players running around.
