About five hours ago, the Angeldust website and game server went down due to reasons outside of my control. The data center host did not inform me of any upcoming maintenance so I'll be investigating what happened here. My apologies for this service interruption—let me know if you have issues with the game or with signing in to your account.

The data center host answered: "The restart of your server was caused by us. The reason was an important BIOS update on the host system, which required a reboot …" @JeremyDarkling: I'm truly sorry for your data loss. Unfortunately I have no way of getting your work back—it was lost during the system reboot. I hope you have the motivation to redo the parts that have been lost. In almost seven years of hosting Angeldust this was the second hard shutdown. During the first I don't think we lost data, but this time we did. That is unacceptable to me. I will immediately harden the game server software against future unplanned system shutdowns.

I've made the server gracefully shut down upon receiving SIGTERM now, but I'm running into the problem where the system database server process is terminated before my server code gets a chance to synchronize its data. Anyone with systemd experience is welcome to chime in how to add a dependency or scripted delay for this.

EDIT: I thought it worked, but it didn't. Apparently the database's systemd unit I'm dealing with has pseudo-components to it and you can't build a dependency chain from them. Just my luck! I'll continue to research this.

A fix for the issue is now rolled out—sorry for the three Angeldust game server restarts in just two days! The upside is that all user data should now properly get saved on unplanned server reboots.
