Why not add a more filters for research players for examples of filters could be : Nationality, Level. Examples : You're in player category u put a filter of lvl let's say 50 then all players who are lvl 50or + will appear on the screen.

I agree, a better search system for the leaderboards would be awesome.

My first plan is to add additional leaderboards with different characteristics so we might potentially have different top players on there, working around Hummm :P
