Indeed, trees cannot be grown. So every time you cut down a tree (with the Builders axe), the world loses a tree permanently! I have seen people build tree-like structures with brown/ green blocks though.

Since I want to be a "special snowflake" among the Angeldust community, I will try my best in explaining your question and assisting you. 1st: You CAN'T grow trees within the Angeldust world. 2nd: Trees can only be removed while using the Builder class. 3rd: You CAN'T obtain wood from chopping down trees with the axe. I hope this helps you out.
